Quien Quiere Ser Millionario Special Edition:
The pH concept
Pedro: Good evening folk we are all here gathered to play Quien Quiere Ser Millionario. Today we have a special guest that comes all the way from China, Anthony Furlin (audience cheers). The program of the today is focused on the pH concept. We are starting with the first pH question on the night for 100$ dollars!
The question says:
Who developed the pH concept?
A) Zacharias Jansen
B) Soren Sorensen
C) Robert Hook
D) Peter Pan
Answer: Soren Sorensen was a Danish scientific born in January 9, 1868. He developed the pH concept on 1901 while he investigated the concentration of ions in proteins, which was specialized in hydrogen ions. He died on February twelvth in 1939, his legacy to science is still present today.
The pH is a system used to express concentration of what?:
A) Radioactive ions
B) Hydrogen ions
C) Moles
D) Molecules
Answer: The pH is the concentration of hydrogen ions in a mole per liter, is equal to the negative logarithmic value of the Hydrogen ion (H+). PH can be viewed as an abbreviation for power of Hydrogen. In which scale is the pH measured?:
A) From 0 to 10
B) From 0 to 5
C) From 0 to 14
D) From 0 to 20
Answer: the pH is measured in a scale from 0 to 14. This scale measures the acidity and baseness of pH in a solution. A neutral solution is the hydrogen ion that have a pH of 7, which is the middle of the scale. A hydrogen ion which has a pH less than 7 is pH considered acidic. A pH greater than 7 is a basic pH.
The pH of solution is the _____________ of the hydrogen ion concentration.
A) Moles concentration
B) Density
C) Logarithm
D) Negative logarithm
Answer: The logarithm to an ion from a given base, is the exponent to which a base must be raised to produce that number. For example: the logarithm of 1000^-10 is 3.

What is pOH?
A) The negative logarithm of the hydroxide ion concentration.
B) The negative logarithm of the hydrogen ion concentration
C) The concentration of molecules per liter
D) The concentration of radioactivity in an ion
Answer: in a similar way the pOH is the negative logarithm of the hydroxide ion concentration. The difference with the pH Is the extra element: Oxygen. This element alters the scale order. Solution greater than 7 are acidic, while solutions that are less than 7 are basic.

What is the formula for calculating pH?
A) mx+b
B) A+A
C) –logarithm10 ×hydrogen ion concentration
D) A+B
Answer: –logarithm10 ×hydrogen ion concentration. This formula is the method used to calculate the pH of hydrogen ion solution. In case where the logarithm is 1 the pH is the concentration of the hydrogen ion, otherwise it requires this formula. In a similar way pOH uses this formula but with a negative hydroxide concentration. This negative value makes the pOH opposite to the pH according to the scale, for example, if a pH equals to 6, the pOH equals to 8.
What is an effect of pH?
a) Acid rain
b) Condensation
c) Murphy’s law
d) Inertia
Answer: acid rain. Natural rain has the water pH level of 5.6. Acid rain water has a pH less than 5.6. Water becomes more acidic when it dissolves carbon dioxide gases, nitrogen oxides and sulfur. These pollutants come from cars and industrial plants that burn coal and oil. This acidity affect the building, the forests and live in water environments.

What is a synonym for base or pOH?
A) Alkaline
B) Solid
C) Electron
D) Ion
Answer: you can say alkaline, pOH or base and it would still be the same
Which of the following factor affect pH?
A) Gravity
B) Nitrogen oxides
C) Location
D) Einstein relative formula
Answer: Nitrogen oxides. N2O is an oxide of nitrogen. It is produced mostly by automobiles exhaust. This oxide makes the solution acid when it dissolves, making it very harmful. When a solution is polluted by it may even kill, for example pollution on lakes result I the death of fish if the pH reduces its level less than 4.5.
Which of these will you drink if you stomach is acidic?
a) milk of magnesia
b) lemon juice
c) gastric juice
d) blood

Answer: although gastric juices are more acidic, you can’t ingest them so milk of magnesia will be the most acidic substance you can ingest in order to decrease the pH. The low pH concentration of milk of magnesia makes it possible for the pH of the body to decrease when it is ingested.

Peter: Well my dear friend, you have lost 1, 000, 000 dollars how do you fell….
Chinese guy: (Upset chinese dialogue) (leaves the room)
Peter: well, you can’t win always. Well we hope you enjoyed and learned everything about the pH concept in this special show. Greeting to all our public, and this was Quien quiere ser millionario!!
